Information Technology Services (ITS) offers virtual server hosting service options for the campus community.  Virtual servers hosted by ITS are in the campus Data Center.  Servers are backed up, both locally and off sight, regularly patched & monitored, and are protected by the data center firewall.  Virtual server hosting relationships are captured in a Service Level Agreement (SLA), which outlines roles & responsibilities, commitments, and other terms.  In all agreements, ITS provides hosting and administration services from maintenance of the server environment to the Operating System (OS).  It is the responsibility of the customer to install and manage all applications loaded to the server, including procurement and maintenance of the applications.  Services rendered for all agreements are reimbursed as a charge-back on an annual basis (unless specified otherwise).

To Obtain Service

  1. Email or call Sean Hernandez (55651) to setup service discussion regarding your requirements
  2. ITS will facilitate a meeting to discuss the requirements
  3. ITS will prepare a quote for consideration. 
  4. If the quote is approved, planning discussions will begin with the Systems & Server team to begin installation/migration to the ITS Server platform.
  5. ITS will deliver the servers and will produce a Service Level Agreement, which outlines the roles, responsibilities, and terms of the hosting agreement.


Research Servers

ITS provides virtual server hosting for research computing.  While the service is identical to non-research virtual server hosting, there may be specific grant requirements that need to be accounted for in the agreement.  Examples include: 

  • Data Retention: Some grants may require the data to be retained for a period of time after the grant ends.  
  • Access to Data:  Some grants may require audit information regarding who has access to grant data.

 Please ensure you communicate any grant related server or data requirements during the requirements meeting with ITS Service Management.

Typical Pricing Structure

Virtual servers are priced based on number of vCPUs, Memory, and Storage needs.  Sample server configurations and associated pricing are presented below to for comparative purposes.  Each customer will be presented with a detailed proposal with actual costs tailored to meet requirements.

Medium Server:

2 vCPU
80 GB Hard Drive
$1,500 annually

Large Server:
4 vCPU
160 GB Hard Drive
$2,000 annually
